"Kek" means obstacles or negativities. "Sel" means purifying or cleansing those negativities. Tibetan Keksel Yoga is the system which came down unbroken through oral transmission from Bonpo Zhang-Zhung Nyen Gyu lineages. The core of the transmission engages the body, mind and spirit of the practitioner in a series of breath, sound and movement exercises, each relating to a specific element. The five elements of fire, wind, space, water and earth, are the foundation fiber of Tibetan medicine and healing; their core theory being everything that exists in this universe is made of the five elements and therefore responsible for the formation of each tissue cell. In practicing Trul khor, one will be able to identify and alleviate physical discomfort or pain, emotional and mental disturbances. These easy to perform yet powerful healing exercises can be used as a support to other meditation practices or practiced alone to clear obstacles caused by disease or strong negative emotions, and to clear, balance and harmonize one’s energy field.
About the Keksel Practice
Keksel is a general Tibetan term referring to practices that work with the subtle energy channels (tsa), winds (lung), and energy drops (tigle). Through working with these three aspects, practitioners can directly experience the enlightened body, speech, and mind.
At the same time, Keksel offers numerous health benefits, as it harmonizes the flow of energy in the body and balances its elements.
According to Tibetan medical theory, the body and consciousness are composed of five elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and space. These elements manifest within us through the interconnection of flesh, blood, heat, breath, and consciousness. The five elements are associated with five organs — the liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and heart — which in turn are connected to five negative emotions: attachment, jealousy, ignorance, pride, and anger.
The practice of Keksel enables the transformation of these emotions into the five wisdoms:
the wisdom of emptiness,
mirror-like wisdom,
the wisdom of equality,
discriminating wisdom,
all-accomplishing wisdom.
The transformation of the “five poisons” into the “five wisdoms” lies at the very heart of the spiritual path.
Keksel offers effective methods for this transformation and, through harmonizing the elements within the body, supports the practitioner’s physical and emotional well-being.
Lineage and Scope of the Teachings
Both tsa lung and trülkhor practices, originating from the paths of Tantra and Dzogchen, belong to the category of Keksel.
As Rinpoche explains:
“In ancient times, Bon practitioners who emphasized Keksel practice lived long and healthy lives and attained lasting peace through realizing the nature of the mind.
In modern times, especially in the West, life is fast-paced and overly intellectual, creating a disconnection between body and mind. This leads to emotional and physical imbalances as well as difficulties in relationships.
I believe that the Keksel teachings are well suited to address these challenges. My wish is to distill the essence of these teachings and bring them together into a system that is best adapted to the modern mind.”
What is Keksel?
Many people have asked me what is Keksel and what are its benefits. Keksel contains all of the essential body movements from the Bönpo Dzogchen and Tantric teachings, including movements from the Tsa Lung and Trul-Khor lineages. I have divided these into three levels of difficulty.
Many of you know that the Bön tradition has many powerful healing mantras. There are even some mantras for specific locations in the body. These exercises utilize these healing mantras in addition to the body movements.
According to Tibetan medical theory, our body is composed of five elements (earth, water, fire, wind and space). These five are expressed within us through the interconnection of our flesh, blood, heat, breath, and consciousness. They are connected to the five organs: liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs and heart. Those organs are in turn, connected to the five poisons; attachment, jealousy, ignorance, pride, and anger.
The five poisons can in turn be transformed into the five wisdoms; emptiness, mirror-like wisdom, wisdom of equality, discriminating wisdom, and all accomplishing wisdom. The transformation of the five poisons into the five wisdoms is the basis of spiritual practice. Keksel provides a powerful method to transform the five poisons into the five wisdoms, and thus attain liberation
Lineage of these teachings:
It is said that the Buddha Tonpa Shenrab’s teachings are as rich as gold and as deep as the ocean. This is especially true for the Dzogchen teachings, of which Keksel is an essential part.
This system of teachings has been passed down by an unbroken oral transmission from the Zhang-Zhung Nyen Gyu lineages.
Why am I teaching Keksel?
In ancient times, those bön practitioners who emphasized Keksel practice, lived long and healthy lives and attained lasting peace through the realization of their mind’s nature.
In modern societies and especially in the West, life is fast paced and cerebral. This creates a mind and body disconnect which leads to further emotional and physical imbalances and problems in interpersonal relationships.
I believe that the Keksel teachings are well suited to address these issues. My desire is to distill the essential points of these teachings into one system that is even more effectively tailored to the western mind.
