The four cycles of the Oral Transmission of Dzogchen Zhang Zhung are:

4. Innermost Secret: Ultimate Cutting Through of the Natural State

These four cycles of transmission—the Outer, Inner, Secret, and Innermost Secret are fundamentally concerned with presenting the Ground, Path, and Fruition of the Great Perfection (Dzogchen). Although the underlying ultimate meaning is singular, they differ significantly in their mode of presentation and the specific aspect of meditative practice they prioritize.

1. The Outer View: General Severance (Phyi Lta Ba Spyi Gcod)

This cycle primarily establishes the context by introducing the universal basis (or general Ground) of the Great Perfection. It extensively elucidates the nature of Self-Arisen Wisdom and frames the discussion by detailing how the conditioned existence (Samsara) and unconditioned liberation (Nirvana) differentiate from this ultimate Ground.

2. The Inner Instruction: Direct Red Guidance (Nang Man Ngag Dmar Khrid)

This cycle focuses intensely on the minutiae of practical application. It provides detailed, 'direct-pointing' instructions concerning the locus of awareness (Rigpa) residing within the elemental aggregates, the causal path, the gateway of perception, and offers precise methods for their practical engagement and cultivation.

3. The Secret: Naked Seeing of Rigpa (Gsang Ba Rig Pa Gcer Mthong)

This cycle reveals all the crucial points for the arising of the Manifestation of Awareness and Clear Light. Specifically, through a direct instruction, it introduces the naked, uncontrived recognition of awareness, utilizing the power of the eye channels. It teaches how to sustain the unceasing perception of one's essential Buddhahood the ultimate nature as directly viewed through the center of the eyes.

4. The Innermost Secret: Ultimate Cutting Through of the Natural State (Yang Gsang Gnas Lugs Phugs Chod)

This final cycle describes how, by engaging in a single-pointed, exclusive pursuit of the great Self-Arisen Wisdom, the Ground-Display arises from the Ground. It explains the process of culminating in the Exhaustion of Phenomena and ultimately arriving at the Fruition, or the final state of realization.
