Short Daily Phurba Practice
of Phurba Drugsé Chempa
(3.2.3.3) The Gom Rim (Stages of Meditation) on the Deity
Third, the Stages of Generation and Meditation (Kyéd Gom gyi Rimpa) on the
Deity:
Since Kyéd Rim (the Generation Stage) is invariably comprised of the Three
Tingdzins (Concentrations):
First, the [Tingdzins of] Suchness and All-Illuminating are to be understood according to the general [teaching].
Regarding the Causal Tingdzin, there are two modes of generation: peaceful and wrathful. As for the peaceful [aspect], for the time being, it is left uncontrived within the Expanse of the Sphere.
Since the [practice] applicable to this occasion is the wrathful one, regarding that Kyéd Rim Stage, there are two: General and Specific.
The First Tingdzin is the Tingdzins of Suchness which is meditating on the nature of mind. You start with this emptiness practice going directly into the ultimate essence view or the Dzogchen view – both are the same. You meditate into this state of suchness, resting into a state of pure awareness without following any thoughts in a state without any reference point.
The Second Tingdzin is the All-Illuminating Tingdzins, which is meditating on compassion. You recognize that you have the emptiness view, and within this you give rise to great compassion for all beings. You can meditate here on the four immeasurables of great love, compassion, joy, and equanimity for all beings. This is the foundation for generating the Enlightened Mind. Generate in your own heart a real feeling of warmth, love, joy, and compassion for all other sentient beings. Come to know this warmth that is always available to you in your own heart.
The Third Tingdzin is the Casual Tingdzins. This is particular to Phurba and the main practice of Phurba. You can imagine Phurba Drugse Chempa in the space above and in front of you, or you can visualize yourself in this form. Or you can even imagine both together at the same time which are not separate from each other, as both the inner and outer are equally appearing and nondual. But when beginning it is often better to pick one method, outer or inner visualization.
Regarding the General [Generation of] the Principal of the Phurpa [Deities],
Walphur Drugsé Chempa—from the Phurpai Kutö (Praise of the Phurpa’s Body):
“From the Mind-Emanation of Khagying, the emanation of the Great Wrathful One arose: three faces, six arms, a black phurpa body, deep blue-black, and radiating a terrifying mass of light. The six hands brandish the Phurpas of Existence. As the intended activity, he tames the sadag (earth lord spirits).”
As it is stated, one should generate [the deity] in this general manner.
Start with visualizing a lotus throne. Upon this lotus throne imagine a sun and moon cushion. Upon this are laying two sadak earth spirits. Your lower half is in the form of a three-sided phurba, and the top of the phurba spike has a water monster spirit with its mouth open. Coming up from the waist out of the water monster spirit’s mouth you have a dark blue body. You have six arms holding five phurbas. Two are held high, two are held to the side and the bottom two are held together reaching around your consort. You are rolling this fifth phurba between your hands. Two great wings stretch out over the world. You have three heads. The center head is dark blue, with a white head on the right side and a red head on the left side. Each of these heads has three eyes. Nine total eyes looking in the ten directions omniciently. Your hair is untied and flying up like a mass of flames. You are joined in union with your consort who is blue in color with three eyes and a fierce expression. Around both your waists is an endless knot made of snakes. In her right hand she holds a phurba. In her left hand she holds a skull cup filled with the hearts of sadak earth spirits. You are neither just the Yidam Phurba, nor just the consort, but are both together in union – nonseparate. Together you stand within a great mass of blue flames – the compassionate wisdom flames of the yidam. Try to feel this as real and lively as you can. Feel the fire crackling around you. Feel the phurbas in your hands. As much as you can allow your body to transform. Allow your speech to transform through reciting the mantra. Allow your mind to transform into the Enlightened Mind of Phurba. Let yourself fall into this state of Phurba and beyond into your own nature of mind. If that happens, remain in the nature of mind as long as you can. If you find yourself following thoughts, then just begin again bringing yourself back to the form of the Yidam Phurba.
We try to visualize this Yidam Phurba very clearly. We try to become the Yidam Phurba transforming our ordinary body, our ordinary speech, and our ordinary mind into the form, power, and energy of the Yidam Phurba. From this transformation we connect with the Yidam Phurba. It is here we then recite the essence mantra – the Nyenpa dzab. This is the mantra to fully connect to the Yidam Phurba. This is the central mantra of the Yidam Phurba.
Nyenpa Dzab (Mantra):
SO OM HÉ - TRAG SHA - TIB TA - KI LING - YA
TSA TRA - MA RA - YA
A TRA - TSIN DHA - TRO TA - TIB TA - BHIN DHA - PO TA - LHEN
WAL PHUR - NAG PO - DRA GEG - KYI - NYING LA - KHA THAM - BÉ
THUM TA - NEN
Completion Stage:
If you've invited Phurpa above you, Phurpa comes down and dissolves into you. And you as Phurba also dissolve into light. Your mind dissolves into the Enlightened Mind of Phurba so that you are resting in the true nature – the true state of emptiness & bliss of Phurba which is no different than your own nature of mind. Rest in this dissolution and nature of mind.
Then to end, recite the praise of the mantra. You can visualize Phurba above you and offer this praise.
SO! In the center of the blazing expanse of the É charnel ground,
in the dark-purplish light of an apocalyptic mountain of flames,
I am the Black Phurpa, along with the retinue of the Ten Wrathful Ones and Consorts.
The form of the Black Phurpa has three heads and six arms.
The Body is a mass of light with a myriad of flames,
removing the dense gloom of the three-thousandfold universe.
The Speech is the recitation of the Phurpa Tong Dzab,
washing away the sorrow of the three realms of cyclic existence.
The Mind is clear in immovable enlightened intent,
conquering the Six Causes, the Five Poisons, and the hosts of demons.
To your Body, Speech, and marvelous qualities,
I offer the Dzab and Essence.
My deity from successive lifetimes,
until you are clearly visualized, I will generate and meditate [upon you].
Until you are accomplished, I will perform the Nyenpa and Drubpa.
Your Divine Face, realized through Nyenpa and Drubpa,
please reveal to me here and now.
Bestow blessings, empowerments, and accomplishments!
