Begin by finding a comfortable seated position.
Let your body rest.
Let your breath settle.
Let your awareness drop into the center of your being.
Take a few moments to arrive. Feel the weight of your body supported by the earth.
Feel the rise and fall of your breath.
Inhale… Exhale…
Now, gently bring your awareness to the heart.
We begin this meditation with a mantra of deep compassion and protection.
The ancient mantra of Tara.
A mantra of fearless love and swift protection.
Let the sound move through you.
Let it open you.
Chant softly or silently:
Oṁ tāre tuttāre ture soha
Now, gently bring someone to mind— Someone you know, or have known, who is suffering.
Someone in need of protection.
Hold them in your heart, without judgment or fixing.
Just presence. Just care.
And as you hold them in your heart, begin to recite—silently or aloud— calling upon the energies of compassion to surround them:
Oṁ… [Name]… Tāre Tuttāre… [Name]… please protect, please protect… Soha
Repeat this a few times at your own pace.
Feel the sincerity of the request.
Reflecting, bring this person to mind again and notice that they have a body and a mind, just like me.
This person has feelings, emotions, and thoughts, just like me.
This person has, at some point in his or her life, been sad, disappointed, angry, hurt, or confused, just like me.
This person has, in his or her life, experienced physical and emotional pain and suffering, just like me.
This person may have different unpleasant situations or sufferings that he or she wants to be free from, but you are alike in wanting to avoid suffering.
No matter what their sufferings, they are the same as you in wanting to be free from them.
This person wishes to be healthy and loved, and to have fulfilling relationships, just like me.
This person wishes to be happy, just like me.
There is no reason that my happiness or wish to avoid suffering is any more or less important than this person’s.
We are the same.
Now shift our awareness, and let yourself — your identity — dissolve into openness.
From that openness— from the stillness of emptiness—there is this wisdom of equality.
Feel yourself within a circle of protection.
A sacred boundary where all beings are equal.
No higher, no lower. No better, no worse.
Just equal.
Now, imagine that around you, surrounding you and this person, are wisdom beings
— Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dakinis—
all radiant with light and love.
They offer protection.
They keep all harm at a distance.
They infuse the space with compassionate awareness.
As they too are just like me.
Each and every Buddha and Bodhisattva has the loving heart of awareness just like me.
Now visualize:
In the center of your chest, a luminous moon disk. On it, a lotus throne.
Seated there, arising from your own wisdom mind— is you, in the form of Green Tara.
Radiant, smiling, courageous.
Your right hand extended, offering fearlessness.
Your left hand holds a blue lotus, blooming.
Sitting in the heroic cross-legged posture, and adorned with all kinds of jewelry.
You are her.
Now, imagine green light at different places on your body— as protective blessings.
On the crown of your head: a sphere of green light radiating. Oṁ tāre soha
On your eyes: a sphere of green light radiating. Oṁ tuttāre soha
On your nose: a sphere of green light radiating. Oṁ ture soha
On your ears: a sphere of green light radiating. Oṁ tu soha
On your tongue: a sphere of green light radiating. Oṁ re soha
On your chest over your hear: a sphere of green light radiating. Oṁ tāriṇi soha
You are surrounded, infused, protected.
Allow this green light to radiate out protecting the bodies, hearts, and senses of all beings.
All beings who are just like me.
Needing protection, just like me.
Allow this green light of protection to shine equally in all direction without division or discrimination.
Always wear this sixfold protection. Let it move with you through the world.
Feel yourself now as noble Tara— seated in fearless posture, calm and luminous, offering refuge to all who need.
Now, for a few moments, simply recite the mantra:
Oṁ tāre tuttāre ture soha
Let it echo from your heart, for yourself, for the one you visualized, for all beings.
[Repeat silently or aloud for several minutes.]
When you’re ready, let the visualization dissolve naturally.
Let that light return to your own heart.
Simply rest.
Nothing to do.
Nowhere to go.
Just this.
[Rest for as long as you are able.]
Gently return to the breath.
Feel your body once more.
Notice the ground beneath you.
And when you feel ready, open your eyes.
May all beings be protected.
May all beings be free.
