One of the innermost secret teachings from the Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyud (Aural Transmission of Zhang Zhung). Each of the twenty-one nails describes an essential point of Dzogchen practice – Directly cutting through doubts about one’s Natural State by tracing the Nature of Mind back to its Source.
The teaching of the Twenty-One Nails is a direct expression of Enlightenment – our Natural Mind. Each Nail describes this Natural State from a different point of view. The views are called “Nails” or “Seals” because they stabilize ones experiential understanding of the Natural State. These teachings are said to have come directly from the Primordial Buddha, Küntu Zangpo, who then passed them down by direct mind-to-mind Transmission to eight successive Buddhas. It was then transmitted orally to 24 human Bön Lineage Holders, all of whom were yogis and siddhas who achieved the Rainbow Light Body.
In the 7th century Gyerpung Nangzher Lodpo set down the teachings in writing for the first time in the Zhang Zhung language after receiving them from Tapihritsa, the 25th Zhang Zhung Master, during their third and final encounter.
This Teaching has been transmitted in an unbroken succession of Lineage Holders down to our Teachers of the present day.
The Dzogchen Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung was originally transmitted from Bӧnku Küntu Zangpo mentally without words to the Nine Buddhas of the Mind Transmission. After that, it was orally transmitted successively through the Twenty-Four Dzogchen Masters without being written. Then, from Tapihritsa, these instructions were written on paper that was white like a conch shell in blue ink like turquoise by his student Gurub Nangzher Lӧpo. From then until the present, although many years have passed, the continuity of these instructions remains uninterrupted. They have not been hidden as treasures. The practice lineage and instruction lineage have been passed from one lineage Lama to the next lineage Lama.
The power of blessings of the view of Dzogchen are great. Based on these precious instructions that are profound and clearly expressed, from the Twenty-Four Dzogchen masters who accomplished the rainbow body of great transference in their very lifetime, to the accomplished master Shardza and his students and so forth, who reached the stage of the exhaustion of the four visions, many have accomplished the rainbow body of light.
In the present time, by the blessing of my root Lama, more and more Bӧn practitioners, not just Tibetans, but dharma brothers and sisters all around the world practice the powerful means of enlightenment in a single lifetime without relying on the striving efforts of many eons of these instructions of the Dzogchen Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung. This individual mind-stream is escorted right on the primordial base of empty luminosity. The self-arisen momentary thoughts, the movements of happiness and sadness are liberated in their own nature from the path of liberation of the many texts of Dzogchen.
This time, according to instructions of the Dzogchen Most Secret aspect of reaching a final resolution about the abiding mode, these are the instructions of the word by word commentary of the root text of the Twenty-One Nails.
Therefore, based on these instructions of the Twenty-One Nails, decisive certainty is gained regarding the abiding mode of the Universal Ground by which the dualistic grasping of characteristics of cyclic existence and transcendence of suffering become liberated in their own condition.
Based on these instructions, decisive certainty is gained regarding the abiding mode of Rigpa by which the darkness of delusion and obscurations is naturally cleared in its own condition without the need of abandoning anything.
Based on these instructions, decisive certainty is gained regarding the abiding mode of the Intellect by which all the thoughts and memories arise as the dynamic energy of self-arisen Primordial Wisdom.
Based on these instructions, the basis of delusion of the appearances of the sounds, lights, and rays is definitively resolved to be Rigpa itself, so you never return to the abodes of cyclic existence, and it is no longer possible to be deluded.

Written on conch shell white paper in turquoise blue ink. Taught by the Emanated Being to the Shen of fortunate karma. Transmitted successively to the individuals of later generations. These are the nails of the twenty-one essential points.

Do not follow the past and future.
The explanation of the result of distinguishing between the mind and the nature of the mind:
The impurities dissolve in the expanse, and the purity becomes luminous.
From the mantle of the Intellect being stripped, Rigpa arises nakedly.
From the masses of clouds of thoughts being cleared, Primordial Wisdom is uncovered.
As for identifying the mind and the nature of the mind,
The nature of the mind is non-conceptual.
It becomes the basis of everything.
It is neutral.
It has unceasing arising potential.
Having these four qualities, it is the Universal Ground, or the nature of the mind.
The mind is the thoughts and mental activity.
Anything arises from it.
It is liberated if it is relaxed.
If it is left alone it mixes.
These are the four qualities of the Intellect, or the mind.
As for gaining decisive certainty about the mind and the nature of the mind...
Through the Three Types of Restraints, distracting activities are abandoned.
Through the Three Types of Relaxations, the mind is settled in its natural condition.
Through the Three Methods of Remaining, the state of Rigpa is held.
Through the Three Non-Followings, the continuity of karmic traces is cut.
Through the Three Types of Continuities, the state of familiarity is maintained.
Through the Three Hidden Methods, the Natural State of Mind is kept faultlessly.
Through the Three Arisings the manifestations of Rigpa are purified.
Through the Three Liberations, everything is left in non-duality.
Through the Three Non-Obscurations, the final result is reached.

First they are like water falling from the edge of a steep mountain.

The white Shenlha that is with no basis of designation.

From the Zero-Sized Primordial Wisdom luminosity the appearance of the great Zero-Sized Light naturally arises.
The light arises in itself without uniting or separating.
The luminosity is insubstantial and appearances are without inherent existence.
It is without form, colors, or partiality.
It is beyond the measurement of size of big or small.
It is called the great appearance of the Reality Body,
and the root deity of the designated existent white Shenlha.
It is also known as the special vision appearances of Rigpa.
When the self-knowing Rigpa eye arises with the Zero-Sized Enlightened Body...
It sees everywhere in the ten directions,
and the Enlightened Body is without front or back.
Without looking, the unobscured eye sees everything.
It arises as the great transparency without outer or inner.
It abides as the great total pervasiveness without boundary or center.
It is the basis of arising of everything, but is not stained by anything.

Before the Rigpa King that abides from the beginning there is no cyclic existence and transcendence of suffering, eons or existence or elements..
The Rigpa King arose before everything.
Before Rigpa Buddhas do not exist.
At that time sentient beings did not exist so it does not come from karma.
Individuals did not exist, so it is not produced by their efforts.
There are no causes or conditions as it is naturally uncompounded.
It is not created from the subtle particles that compose the world.
It is not created from the causal elements of the body.
It does not emerge from the sperm nor is it born from the womb.
It is not from the realization of the transcendence of suffering or the delusion of cyclic existence.
Self-arisen Primordial Wisdom abides as the basis and root of everything.
Fourth, Explaining the reason why it is called the “Zero-Sized Primordial Wisdom”
It is self-arisen vividly from the beginning.
It is without killing or reviving, benefit or harm, increase or decrease, construction or contamination.
It is without birth or death, growth or decay, happiness or suffering, without any opposition.

The union of space and internal space is the treasury of the Dzogpa Chenpo, the Great Completion.

2. How the Path of the Channel of Rigpa Arises
Rigpa arises in the path of the channel.
Arising upwards is the path of the transcendence of suffering.
Going downwards is the path of cyclic existence.
From the right arises the path of negative qualities.
From the left arises the path of positive qualities.
The three doors are the paths of the Three Realms of cyclic existence.
The four doors are the paths of the four modes of birth.
The five doors are the paths of the five continuous states.
The nine doors are the paths of the nine abodes.
The central channel is the path of the non-duality of cyclic existence and transcendence of suffering.
The Rigpa King arises from this path.
It arises from the expanse of emptiness of the Universal Ground.
It arises from within the appearing lights.
It arises from the enlightened continuum of the central channel.
Unmixed Rigpa arises from the path naturally.
Great Primordial Wisdom is the luminous path.

This has no door of the path of cyclic existence.
Rigpa is the human riding the horse of the thinking mind, riding the wind without obstructions with the horse whip. Proceeding on the path of enlightenment of the central channel, departing from the secret door of bliss at the crown of the head.

Stripped of the mantle of the conceptual Intellect.
Your own face of self-arisen Primordial Wisdom is seen.
The darkness of ignorance and delusion is cleared.
The Three Realms and nine abodes are cut from the root.
The continuity of the path of the afflictive emotions of the five poisons is cut.
The ocean of suffering of the six realms is dried up.
There is no door of cyclic existence of the four modes of birth.

Like the sun free from darkness, the Rigpa King is free from the veil of darkness.
The six eyes of special vision arise at the forehead.
Seeing nakedly, realization is totally complete.

The self-knowing Rigpa arising in the expanse of the heart is the Reality Body.
In the path of the channel is the natural Completion Body.
The Emanation Body is self-arisen at the lamp doors.
Fourth, The Direct Introduction that the Three Bases are Enlightenment
Self-Arisen primordial enlightenment abides within. Spontaneously complete enlightenment abides within.
Manifest enlightenment is seen in the space without obscurations.
Fifth, the Explanation of the Significance of the Instructions
As the Universal Ground is recognized, you meet the mother of the nature of reality.
As the hidden and buried Primordial Wisdom is revealed, the obscuration of darkness is cleared.
As Rigpa emerges nakedly, the Three Enlightened Bodies directly manifest.
By identifying the conditions of delusion, delusion is completely settled.
As the natural state of mind is pointed out, doubt and hesitation are finished.
As the door of the treasury of Rigpa is opened, the depths of the treasury of the Universal Ground bursts forth.

The three types of unions are the basis of the emanations of the three types of Enlightened Bodies.

Father and Mother Consorts, chief deities and retinues are beyond conception.
The great mandala comes naturally without effort.
The mandalas of the Three Enlightened Bodies are complete in the Enlightened Mind.
As the mandalas arise in themselves, they cannot be sought or achieved.
As the appearances are without inherent existence, there cannot be desire and attachment.

Every appearance is the reflection of the Enlightened Body. Every sound is the reflection of Enlightened Speech. Every thought is the reflection of the Enlightened Mind. Every occurrence is the reflection of the Enlightened Qualities. Everything is complete in the Single Sphere.

Second, How Those of Medium Capacity are Liberated
If one is not liberated at that time, then the first bardo arises.
As for the lights, the pure realms are without boundaries or center,
Arising like a rainbow in the sky.
Sounds are insubstantial, roaring from within space, self-occurring continuously like the sound of thunder.
Rays are indeterminate displays of magical emanations,
Like an unrolled silk brocade blanket.
For the individual who is familiar with the practice, the Enlightened Bodies and palaces of the deities arise in a complete manner.
At that time by the six clairvoyances and six remembrances,
The three types of appearances arise to welcome you.
If you are familiar with them, you will be escorted.
Your mindstream will be taken to the base of the Universal Ground.
You see appearances as your own face, like seeing your face in a mirror.
Self-knowing Rigpa comes to know itself, like a prince recognizing himself.
The delusion of ignorance is naturally cleared, like the sun shining on a dark island.
The Rigpa King holds its own state, like a prince staying in the capital.
The sounds, lights, and rays dissolve in the mind, like the sunrays gathering to the mother sun.
The impurities are liberated in the space of purity, like ice breaking and melting in a lake.
The contaminated is pacified in the state of the uncontaminated, like salt dissolving in water.
Karma and afflictive emotions are liberated in the base, like masses of clouds disappearing into the sky.
The Three Realms of cyclic existence are completely reversed, like stopping the source of an irrigation ditch.
Cyclic existence and transcendence of suffering that are without duality dissolve in the base, like a rainbow disappearing in the sky.
The mandalas of the Three Enlightened Bodies automatically arise, like the rays of the sun and the moon reflecting in water.
Third, How Those of Inferior Capacity are Liberated
For those individuals with little familiarity, the Rigpa King dissolves in the Universal Ground.
This remains for one to three days.
Within seven the purity will gradually arise.
The complete pure realms do not arise.
Through conditions there is liberation in the bardo.
If not liberated, then the impure appearances arise.
There may be pure appearances seen in the Bardo of Becoming.
Life after life one will be born in good circumstances and be swiftly liberated.

the Natural State clearly arises, it is not recognized.
Appearances are seen as externally appearing and real.
Caught in the net of delusion, one wanders in cyclic existence.

Some become conceited from this, chained by the object of cognition of ego-grasping.
Some hold this to be a real thing, and wander in cyclic existence by the attachment of holding it as real.
Some panic and are frightened, going astray in the lower vehicles.
Some revile this, not meeting with the meaning for eons.
Some do not practice these instructions properly.
Since samaya is damaged, they fall into the lower realms.
Therefore, these instructions are very dangerous.
For this reason, these secret instructions should be a hidden treasure in the Universal Ground of the Mind.
Do not spread them, but seal them in secrecy.

By exhausting philosophical systems of your own or others, there is impartiality.
By exhausting the elements, one does not disappear into space.
By exhausting characteristics, one does not transfer or change in the expanse.
By exhausting sentient beings, there is no birth and death in the mind.
By exhausting the three doors, the three dynamic energies of the body are completed.
By exhausting the three appearances, the three types of universal dimensions arise.
As the two expanses arise to oneself, one is in the bliss of the state of the nature of reality.
As the two lights arise to oneself, there is everlasting, endless bliss.
As the yungdrung (changeless) pure body arises in oneself, one is free from the enemy of unhappiness.
As the six divine eyes arise in oneself, one cannot be obscured by anything.
As the Three Enlightened Bodies arise in oneself, there is no hope or doubt about the fruit.
As the door of the treasure of the mind is opened, whatever one needs is complete.
