Before we begin, I want to preface that these teachings in the first division of the channels, winds, and sphere/drops are a copious amount of information. Don’t be overwhelmed! If you have ever studied medicine or anatomy, you might know just how much information there is to learn about how the body works. As well as all the years it takes to learn about anatomy and how the body works down to its tiniest parts. What is presented here is directly from the root text in its totality, and it’s an introduction to all the many parts of the body. Imagine it like an introduction to a group of people in a house. It’s important to learn each person’s name and function; likewise it’s important to learn each of the names and functions of the channels, winds, and spheres making up the temple of the Buddha, our body. So don’t feel like you need to memorize or learn all the details, but just be relaxed, open, curious, and allow yourself to be introduced to all the many wonderful parts that make up your body, mind, and what you call “you.” This introduction will lay the foundation or base that we will then build our meditative practice upon in part two.
When we learn all the many channels, winds, and spheres that make up our body, we should view it like we are looking at a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, with all the ornaments, lights, and ribbons. There is so much to take in. So many lights, sparkles, colors and shapes. But we don’t have to count, label, and figure them all out. We can just appreciate the full spectrum, the full array of the wonder that makes up a Christmas tree, or our own body and mind. So we can allow our imagination to play with all of these elements.
Three subdivisions:
Essence of the wind
Enumeration of the wind
Division of the wind
All functions of the body are performed by the wind.
This wind has two aspects; wind of afflictive emotions and wind of nirvana.
The wind of afflictions produce our physical and mental suffering.
The wind of nirvana produce our physical and mental happiness.
Three subdivisions:
extensive
medium
condensed
Precious winds of existing: 25 winds.
(These are not discussed in details, but Shardza Rinpoche mentions they come from the scriptures)
There are nine kinds of winds.
Wind of the expanse of the nature of reality.
Bliss wind of primordial wisdom
Natural wind of rigpa.
Horse wind of mind.
Wind of the karma.
Wind of afflictive emotions
Wind that disturbs our physical health.
Wind of the samsaric existing.
World destroying wind.
1 Wind of the expanse of the nature of reality
Wind of the expanse of the nature of reality performs the actions of the nature of reality. This means that all impermanent phenomena have this wind of the nature of reality. This gives the wind of the capacity of their reality. Like water flows down, and fire goes up.
2 Bliss wind of primordial wisdom
The bliss wind of primordial wisdom performs the action of producing our own primordial wisdom, yeshe. This primordial wisdom depends on the inner most subtle wind. What is this inner most subtle wind? It is the bliss wind of primordial wisdom. When you connect with this wind, yeshe naturally arises.
3 Natural wind of rigpa.
The natural wind of rigpa (awareness) performs the function of self-arising rigpa. Rigpa and the natural wind of awareness are inseparable. But they are also not one. Without natural wind of awareness, rigpa cannot arise or exist. Rigpa performs its function within this natural wind. This is why after death, there is still rigpa in this subtle wind of awareness. Within that the practitioner can be continued on that stage of ripga, called tukdom. This natural wind of rigpa does not rely on causes and conditions, but arises on its own nature.
4 Horse wind of mind.
The horse wind of mind performs the function of various movements of the body, speech, and thinking. Everything is connected with this wind. When this horse wind stops, mind cannot perform thoughts. Mind will then settle down. Catch the horse wind, means where thoughts are happening. When the horse stops, thoughts, speech, and body stop.
5 Wind of the karma.
The wind of the power of karma performs the activity of the bardo. In the bardo state there is a lot of movement. This is not physical, but mental movement. All the activities of the bardo are made by this wind. This is how you move through the bardo. This is why they say not to make karma, as it gives rise to much horse wind of the mind.
6 Harsh Wind of afflictive emotions
The harsh wind of afflictive emotions performs the function of five poisons; anger, jealousy, pride, desire, and ignorance. Every consciousness is performed by this wind; powered by this wind. If we don’t know selflessness then we are grasping at self. This grasping is through this wind. The connection with the “I, me, mine”, our impure motivations are generated by this wind. Why do you become angry? Because you connect with the harsh wind of afflictive emotions. It’s never the object of our anger. This is why we are the refuge and the protector, because all the poisons come from us.
7 Wind that disturbs our physical health.
The wind that disturbs our subtle atomic assembly of physical health performs the function of disturbing the elements and produces sickness. This is the main source of imbalance of the elements and our sickness, even more so than karma (karma is still at work.) When the elements are imbalanced, we get sick. Diet, exercise, and good sleep all are important to reduce this wind. It is all within our hand, our control. But when it gets out of hand, we should see a doctor. But before it gets bad, all of this depends on how our wind functions through our actions.
8 Wind of the samsaric existing.
The wind of the power of samsara performs the function of creating the samsara world and its inhabitants. How do you connect to samsara? Through how you are walking, speaking, thinking, and acting in the world. This world that manifests is your world. How you live within these circumstances are connected to this wind. If you control this wind, you can make within this samsaric world good qualities of body, speech, and mind such as being friendly, making friends, healthy, and a good life. If you don’t control this wind, we suffer from this wind.
9 World destroying wind.
The world destroying wind (destructions of the eons) performs the function of destroying the outer world and sentient beings. This means our own world, and sentient beings means our self. Our own world, where we live, our house, friends, our city, our country, and ourselves; this is our world. When this wind is out of control, then we destroy our outer body and our inner elements.
Each of these winds have 5 parts.
Five Winds of each of the nine winds
Wind of the expanse of the nature of reality has
Five winds of enlightened bodies. The five enlightened bodies:
Reality Body - Dharmakaya
Completion Body - Sambhogakaya
Emanation Body - Nirmāṇakāya
Nature Body
Fully Enlightened Body
Each of these five have their own wind. This wind is not only element wind according to tummo. Element wind is impermanent and produced by causes and conditions. These give enlightened body winds are not element winds produced by causes and conditions.
Bliss wind of primordial wisdom has
Five Wisdom Winds:
Wind of the wisdom of reality
Wind of mirrorl-ike wisdom
Wind of wisdom of equality
Wind of the wisdom of discernment
Wind of the wisdom of all-accomplishing wisdom
These five winds are also not element winds. These winds are the same nature as wisdom. In their subtle level they are the winds of Primordial Wisdom. But we usually connect to the coarse gross level winds. We have the inner subtle winds, but we don’t connect because we are too busy with the gross winds. Too busy eating, and enjoying stuff.
Natural wind of rigpa has
Five Winds of the Nature of Rigpa
Object apprehending wind
Apprehending consciousness wind
Activity wind (ability to perform functions)
Wind that recognizes delusion
Wind that recognizes the unmistaken (knowing reality)

Wind that cause phlegm illness
Wind that causes all disease together (wind, bile, and phlegm)
Wind that produces two-fold disease (wind & bile, or bile & phlegm, or wind & phlegm)
Wind of the cyclic existence has
Winds of Samsara (cyclic existence):
Wind of the pure birth
Wind of the impure birth
Wind of the external world
Wind of the inner beings
Wind of the bardo state
World destroying wind has
Winds of the Eons
Wind of the eon of power of compassion
Wind of the eon of lifespan
Wind of the eon of time
Wind of the eon of karma
Wind of the eon of destruction
The eon of power of compassion means the eon that does not have any five poisons. Here there is no need to be angry, jealous, or desire. Beings here have no need for this, everything is perfect. But slowly one at a time, eon by eon, the poisons are introduced and grab hold. In our current eon, all the poisons are present.
Wind of the eon of lifespan means that every sentient being has their own eon of a lifespan, from birds, to human, to hungry ghosts. This is connected with the wind.
Wind of the eon of time means that every impermanent phenomena has its own time. A flower has its own time for it to manifest. This applies to materials, as well as living beings. Babies are only babies for a time, affected by this wind.
Wind of the eon of karma connects everything. How many friends you have, if you have a job, children, house, etc. All of this is produced and connected with this wind. Everything is moving by this karmic wind.
The wind of the eon of destruction is responsible for destroying everything, from all sentient beings, to all the planets and galaxies.
Nine winds with Five subdivisions total 45 kinds of winds.
Condensed into three divisions:
Winds of Samsara
Co-emergent Winds (innate wind)
Meditation Winds
Winds of Samsara

Ultimate Self-cessation of the Wind
This is the pure nature of the wind which is possessed by the Buddha. The Buddhas have wind, and it is this ultimate self-cessation of the wind.
The Wind that is Similar to the self-cessation of the Wind
This is the wind possessed by Bodhisattvas. This is not real self-cessation of the wind, but a wind similar to it. Possessed by those who have Bodhichitta.
Seeming Self-cessation of the Wind
This is the wind that is the incoming and outgoing breath of the gods of the form realm (of the three realms). This is not like our human breath of the desire realm.

Natural wind of rigpa.
Horse wind of mind.
Wind of the karma.
Wind of afflictive emotions
Wind that disturbs our physical health.
Wind of the samsaric existing.
World destroying wind.
9 winds above multiplied by 2,400 = 21,600 Winds
A healthy, young person has 21,600 innate winds flowing through the mouth and nose in a single day. These 21,600 winds are called the “Stopping the Winds by Counting”
Through all of these 21,600 winds are generated the many winds of happiness, suffering, good & bad, birth and death, sleep and awake and so on.
3: Stopping the Winds by Forceful Method
Or the forceful cessation of the wind. This is the Vase Breathing wind. This is where the upper and lower winds are united and compressed like a vase. This is the actual practice of Tummo section called “Vase Breathing” which will be explained later.
4: Stopping Winds Gradually
Has four divisions:
Life Supporting Wind
Tube Clearing Wind
Wind of Great Medicine
Bliss Producing Wind
Life Supporting Wind
This wind is what gives life support and life-force. When the wind and mind stop projecting thoughts, at that time the wind of gradually stopping wind of life supporting is present. This means the person who gradually stops their breath, also stops their thoughts. At that moment, the wind that is present is this wind.
Tube Clearing Wind
This wind clears the path of the channels. The Nine Cleansing Breaths are these tube clearing winds.
Winds of Great Medicine
These winds force out all the illnesses through the pores through Tummo practice. Wind occurring at the time of doing the Keksal exercise. A type of Trul Khor to remove illness through exercise. These Keksal Trul Khor winds are these winds of Great Medicine. They clear inner blockages and illnesses through movement.
Bliss Producing Wind
This wind opens the mouth of the central channel. Like the wind of the practice of meditative equanimity, which is the wind that goes through the central channel and opens the mouth of the central channel. This is the Bliss Producing Wind.
The division of the wind has three parts:
