From perfecting the practice of extracting the essence of the three body of enlightenment.
May the essence of an enlightened mind gradually increase.
May this illusory body of contaminated aggregates be transferred to
the expanse of ultimate wisdom light,
May we enjoy the glorious supreme ultimate great bliss.
Below is the practice of extracting the essence of water from the teachings of "Chulen." This practice is typically done on retreat, where a practitioner is fasting from food, and only relying on water. While we in the "full catastrophe" of daily family life may not be on retreat, we may wish to take a day consuming less, and spending more time mindful of the water we do consume. Even if we are not fully fasting, taking a day to mindfully extract the essence of water and drink mindfully aware of the water can be a great practice. We can also then offer this essence of water to our friends and family and have a day drinking together. Drinking clean water is a wonderful activity, and to do it mindfully and spiritually using the meditation below can be of great benefit.
To prepare, boil clean water to a roiling boil. Pour the water into a precious vessel like a new clean glass. Not an everyday glass. Then place this glass filled with clean water in front of you.
There are three aspects of meditation practice: the key point of the body, the key point of breath, and the key point of visualization.
The key point of the body is the five-fold body posture. Sitting in the lotus position, placing hands in the equipoise gesture, keeping the body straight, with the tongue in the middle of the mouth, and the eyes open looking down the tip of the nose.
The five-fold posture:
Bound Leg Posture: The right foot is placed down on the left assuming a balanced lotus posture.
Neither Straight Nor Bent Bound Hand Gesture: The left hand presses on the right hand. The two thumbs are pointing towards each other in the gesture of equipoise, but not touching.
Unmoving Body Posture: Sit upright and keep the spine straight like a string of pearls.
Unspoken Speech Posture: Place the tongue in the middle of the space of your mouth, and balance the breath. Breathe naturally, either through the mouth, nose, or both.
Unblinking Open Eye Posture: The eyes should be focused down the tip of the nose, not looking up or down.
The key point of the breath is the nine-fold purification breathing practice.
The key point of visualization can be broken down into several stages of meditation.
First Stage of Meditation
Visualize yourself instantly as the white clad goddess of nurturing and nourishment. She wears a white silk dress and holds a wish-fulfilling jewel in her hand. She is a Wisdom Being which is the ultimate state of the mind. She represents the essence of nourishing food. Then imagine that a white stream of nectar flowing from the wish-fulfilling jewel in her hands flows to the water in the glass and dissolves into the water. Then recite the mantra 108 times:
HUM - A YU NI TRI - BAZ RA GU RU - SAR BA SIDDHI - HUM HUM
Then bless the water with the mantra by blowing on the water.
Second Stage of Meditation
Then visualize Kuntuzangpo red in color with one face and two arms holding a nectar vase in the gesture of meditation. Kuntuzangpo is sitting on the water in the glass in front of you.
Third Stage of Meditation
Inhale through the mouth a long continuous whooshing breath, visualizing inhaling the essence of the life-force of nirvana and samsara as a white stream of nectar. This white nectar passes through Kuntuzangpo and dissolves into the water during the inbreath. This doesn’t make logical sense so use your imagination.
Optional: Not included in the text, but you can exhale with the sharp sound “Ha” through your nose and mouth. Imagine that all your inherent non-virtuous actions and obscurations –of this life and past lives– in the form of red streams are exhaled through the nose and mouth.
Do these breath cycles seven times. Then imagine Kuntuzangpo dissolves into the water. Then drink the water, and imagine drinking the nectar of life-force energy of all of samsara and nirvana. Set the aspiration to drink in all the positive qualities of samsara and nirvana.
Then meditate on the natural state of mind. Leave the mind in its natural state for as much as you can.
Do this practice six times throughout the day.
Benefits
If you practice for six continuous days, you will be liberated from the hungry kalpa/eon. There are many kalpas such as disease kalpas, enemy kalpas, etc. If you practice it for 14 days, you will have the confidence of samadhi. If you practice it continuously every day, it will be difficult to become old. Signs of old age will not arise. Such as your hair will turn from white to black and you will have the strength of an elephant. Your time of life will be equal to the sun and moon. All appearances will be under your control – you will not chase after appearances. You will make foot and hand prints on any object. You will be able to run quickly. You can perform magical miracles and clairvoyance will arise. Ultimately you will attain the fourth stage of tantric vidyadhara - awareness holder of spontaneous presence. Vidyadhara is one who is the holder of the secret knowledge of the view of tantra.
