To the Pure Realm of Buddha Ӧpagmé, Limitless Light,
Through single-minded devotion,
Praising with pleasant melody,
I make full prostrations respectfully with my body.

Through your swift compassion that is like a bolt of lightning,
Leading away from ever being born in a bad place,
I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.
From imagining that you are in front of me,
If I pray to you with devotion,
You will never give up your compassion,
It is said that one will be reborn in your Pure Realm,

When your name is heard one time,
One will not be born in an impure body.
Through being born in good castes of gods and humans,
It is said one will be born amongst your retinue.
I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.
It has four subdivisions:
prostration through the body, speech, and mind
prostration of the gods/deities coming from above
prostration of the enlightened body, speech, mind, qualities, and activity
prostration of the benefit of just hearing the name of the Buddha Limitless Light
1: Prostration Through the Body, Speech, and Mind
To the Pure Realm of Buddha Ӧpagmé, Limitless Light,
Through single-minded devotion,
Praising with pleasant melody,
I make full prostrations respectfully with my body.
The first line refers to the Buddha of Limitless Light and the host of deities of the Pure Realm. The second line refers to the prostration through the mind. The third line represents constantly praising the qualities of the deities with beautiful melody - the prostration through the speech. And with the fourth line, palms joined at the head, we do full body prostrations - meaning we go down and all the way to the ground – the prostration through the body.
2: Prostration of the Gods/Deities Coming From Above
Emanating from light rays of the right hand,
Is the green Buddha Limitless Light Ӧpagmé.
Emanating from lights rays of the left hand,
Is the white Great Mother Thugjé Chamma,
Emanating from light rays of the right foot,
Is the blue Secret Lord Ӧpagmé.
Emanating from light rays of the left foot,
Is the azure Appearing Color Ӧpagmé.
Emanating from light rays of the Enlightened Mind,
Are the three deathless Buddhas Father and Sons.
All these Buddhas have their own hand gestures.
Inconceivable gatherings of deities come from above.
I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light!
“Emanating from light rays of the right hand, Is the green Buddha Limitless Light Ӧpagmé.”
The Buddha Limitless Light Ӧpagmé represents the embodiment of the enlightened Buddhas. That is why he is manifesting through his body (hands, feet, and heart). From the palm of his right hand, radiates green light rays, which manifests enlightened Buddha Chime Tsulku Ӧpagmé. His complexion is green, wearing the same clothes as the sambhogakaya Buddhas, with two hands; the right hand pressed down, and the left hand is in the equipoise position like a Tonpa Sherab statue.
“Emanating from lights rays of the left hand, Is the white Great Mother Thugjé Chamma,”
From the palm of the left hand of Buddha Ӧpagmé, radiates light rays which are white like a star. It manifests the great mother Thugje Chamma, who is white in complexion with the same clothes, one face, and two hands holding a vase and mirror.
“Emanating from light rays of the right foot, Is the blue Secret Lord Ӧpagmé.”
From the sole of the right foot of Buddha Ӧpagmé, clear blue light rays radiates, which manifest the secret lord Ӧpagmé, who is blue in complexion, with one face, and two hands. The left hand is in gesture of teaching Bön and holding a lotus flower. That Lotus flower blossoms next to his ear. This represents the definite understanding of the meaning of the teaching - the lotus opened by the ear. His right hand is up in the gesture of offering protection. This offering protection represents protecting all sentient beings from the suffering of cyclic existence. Standing on a sun, moon, and lotus cushion. Standing represents walking tirelessly for the benefit of sentient beings.
“Emanating from light rays of the left foot, Is the azure Appearing Color Ӧpagmé.”
From the sole of the left foot of Ӧpagmé radiates light rays like lapis, manifesting Buddha Nangwe Dopchen Ӧpagmé. He is blue color with one face and two hands. His right hand in the gesture of teaching Bön at the heart holding the stem of the lotus flower. His left hand holds a golden lasso, representing leading sentient beings from cyclic existence. Standing with both legs on a sun, moon, and lotus cushion, representing walking tirelessly for the benefit of sentient beings.
“Emanating from light rays of the Enlightened Mind, Are the three deathless Buddhas Father and Sons.”
From the center of the Buddha Ӧpagmé’s heart radiates light of various colors from which manifest three deathless Buddhas, father (Drenpa Namkha) and sons (Tsewang Rikdzin and Padmasambhava). Drenpa Namkha’s complexion is blue. Tsewang Rikdzin’s is red. Padmasambhava’s is white. Each of them have their own hand gestures.
Up to here, the five Buddhas are emanating from the light of Buddha Ӧpagmé (hands, feet, and heart). These all represent Buddha Ӧpagmé as the embodiment of the enlightened body.
“Inconceivable gatherings of deities come from above. I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light!”
All of these Buddhas and their retinues of Buddhas all surround Buddha Ӧpagmé. There are also an inconceivable host of deities manifesting and arising above. Every part of the enlightened bodies of the Buddhas radiate countless light rays to this world and also beyond to all of the worlds. The light is the energy of compassion that works for the benefit of all sentient beings. Working not only for this world but all the worlds in the ten directions.

6. The Great Pervasive Primordial Wisdom
“The Qualities are like a wish-fulfilling jewel.”
The qualities of the Buddha are like a wish-fulfilling jewel in that you get everything you need just by thinking of it. ‘Yeshe norbu’ – “ye” means “mind”, “she” means “like”, and “norbu” means “jewel.” The mind can think of anything - the mind becomes the Buddha. The mind is the wish fulfilling jewel because it can think of anything. When we become a Buddha, anything arises because there are no obstacles. They are all purified. Any object or subject can be connected with. Sometimes we talk about Buddha being omniscient. Then we wonder, does Tonpa Sherab speak English? Yes. How do you know? Because there is no obscuration to anything for Buddha Tonpa Sherab. All obscurations are purified.
“The Enlightened Activities are effortless, spontaneously complete.”
The enlightened activities of the Buddha require no effort. The activities spontaneously arise spontaneously accomplished.
“I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.”
Body, speech, mind, qualities, and activities of the Buddha are described here in this section.
Because of these, we prostrate.
4: Prostration of the Benefit of Just Hearing the Name of the Buddha Limitless Light
It has three subdivisions:
positive qualities of joining palms together and saying the name of Buddha
positive qualities of visualizing in front and praying
positive qualities of hearing the name and not getting bad body
1: Positive Qualities of Joining Palms Together and Saying the Name of Buddha
Faithfully joining palms together,
Just saying your name one time,
Through your swift compassion that is like a bolt of lightning,
Leading away from ever being born in a bad place,
I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.
“Faithfully joining palms together,”
Any type of person, any religion, rich or poor, castes, counties, language, color, etc. who hears the positive qualities of the Pure Realms of great bliss and through great faith to the Pure Realms can join palms together.
“Just saying your name one time,”
If you say the name of Ӧpagmé, even one time in your life, we have a fortunate opportunity - with fortunate speech, body, and mind. We have the intelligence of human beings and can use the body, speech, and mind for good things.
“Through your swift compassion that is like a bolt of lightning, Leading away from ever being born in a bad place,”
If you call the name through true, strong, pure motivation - ‘please help us, Ӧpagmé’ - he will help through his love and compassion and you will not be born into cyclic existence.
“I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.”
For the reason that, simply saying the name with pure motivation will deliver from samsara, thus we prostrate.
2: Positive Qualities of Visualizing in Front and Praying
When you pray these lines, imagine Ӧpagmé in front of you and pray with strong devotion from the depth of your heart. Feel that this is the only one that can help us from suffering, which we have caused over many lifetimes. Imagine that, without Ӧpagmé, we are not free from suffering. Hold that kind of strong motivation.
From imagining that you are in front of me,
If I pray to you with devotion,
You will never give up your compassion,
It is said that one will be reborn in your Pure Realm,
I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.
This devotion is there automatically when we recognize our suffering. He will help in many ways - many which we don’t recognize, so we forget over and over again. So we pray and prostrate.
“The complete Buddha Limitless Light, believing he is in front of you in the sky, by the devotion of Buddha Limitless Light who knows this intention, Buddha Limitless Light will actually come. If you pray, he will see you with his compassion and love,” from the Supreme Tantra text. From our side, we need to connect, to call up, to dial the number of Buddha Ӧpagmé. This means to have devotion. We prostrate for all of these reasons.
3: Positive Qualities of Hearing the Name and Not Getting a Bad Body
When your name is heard one time,
One will not be born in an impure body.
Through being born in good castes of gods and humans,
It is said one will be born amongst your retinue.
I prostrate to Ӧpagmé, Buddha Limitless Light.
In the text, it says that if you hear the name of Buddha Ӧpagmé even one time in your life, you will not be reborn in a bad body. ‘Bad body’ means bodies that are not very useful. Progressively, through getting extraordinary bodies of gods and humans, you will be born among the realm of Ӧpagmé. This means that you are continuously born as a human to keep practicing until you are in the Pure Realm.
Another text, “Marvelous Jewel tantra” says, “the perfect Buddha Ӧpagmé, the deity whose infinite light embraces all beings with boundless compassion and love, always generate his excellent mind for the benefit of sentient beings throughout the three times of past, future, and present, protecting all sentient being without protection.”
For these reasons, we prostrate through the three doors to Ӧpagmé. Without doubt in the benefit of prayers, doubt of practice, and doubt of hearing “Ӧpagmé” which are a huge blockage of understanding reality and freedom from samsara. It is very important to have single minded devotion until we are free.
According to the Bön tradition, we hold both palms together, leaving space in between the palms, imagining you have a wish fulfilling jewel inside there. This is why they aren’t held completely together.
Then put the palms to the crown of the head. From the wish fulfilling jewel imagine various offering substances as rays of light. This is an offering to all of the Buddha's pure enlightened body from the wish fulfilling jewels. Imagine the wish fulfilling jewel emanating light as the offering substances. The blessing of this offering is that all of the karma and obscuration of the body of self and sentient beings is purified. From this, you get thirty excellent marks of the Buddha.
Second, put the palm to the throat, making an offering to the Buddha’s pure speech. Offering the rays of light from the wish fulfilling jewels, imagine this sound offering is offered to the Buddha's speech. All karma and obscuration of self and others is purified. Imagine that, from this offering, your speech arises as the sixty melodious speeches from the Buddha.
Third, put the palms to the heart, making offerings to the Buddha’s pure mind. The light from the hands transforms into pure devotion, pure thoughts, and positive qualities of thoughts offered to the Buddha’s mind. The blessing of this offering is that all obscuration of the mind of self and all sentient beings are purified. From this offering, you get the sixty-one blessings of the Buddha’s mind.
Finally, prostrate by bringing the palms, head, and knees to the ground. This represents your karma and obscuration of the five poisons being purified. Imagine that you get all positive qualities of the Buddhas.
Then get up and circle both arms out with palms facing up, bringing palms back together, standing straight up with feet together. Do this three times. You can recite the prayer of the pure land when you do this.
The antidote to anger which is the the purification process of confession, is the next topic. According to the purification process of confession in the Pure Realm prayer, there are three divisions.
